Balto started out as a foster dog in 1998. I was fostering for Siberian Husky Rescue of North Texas at the time. Dallas Animal Control found him running down the street that summer dragging a large chain behind him. He was obviously chained out the hot sun and was strong enough to break the chain and get away. After a few weeks at my house we adopted him out to another home and my two female huskies at the time, K2 and Porsche cried all night long when he left. Two days later he escaped from his new home and Dallas Animal Control picked him up again. There was a happy reunion when my girls welcomed him back this time, so I officially adopted him. He was a large alpha husky about 80 pounds and my two female huskies welcomed him into the pack. Now there were three.

Here is Balto in his own special run in my back yard, complete with two dogloos and a giant water dish. I would pair him up with frightened female huskies I rescued from the pound and he would calm them down. He was a strong, confident pack leader.

In 2001 I took Balto out to my friend Bill’s cabin in Cuchara, Colorado. It snowed, and Balto, who grew up in Texas, was able to play in the snow for the first time. He had never seen the white stuff before. Bill and I went skiing the next day at Wolf Creek Pass and I fell and blew out all the ligaments in right knee. I came home in crutches and a boot and Balto was in the bed right next to me, showing support, as I spent the rest of my vacation in bed.
